On the youngsters I'm impressed by Koby's 3/5 & perhaps he will end up with a performance rating over 2400. His only loss so far is to the Championship Leader
I would agree with that. Yesterday. Koby had Black, was outgraded by 125 points and yet took his opponent to school with a masterclass of how to play against 1 b4
I suspect a back-story here. There may be more to this than meets the eye. Sincerely hope I'm not setting hares running when I observe that, by the end of the game (move 30), Koby had four minutes left - but Joe had one hour ten minutes, suggesting the game hadn't been granted his full attention

Really? Then what was the purpose of this vaguely off-colour comment?

I am reminded of the post-mortem of the game Macieja-Anand at the Calvia Olympiad. Vishy commented that, on realising that he had fallen into a lost position, his best hope was to put pressure on his opponent by playing fast. On that occasion it worked, but yesterday Joe was less fortunate ( or didn't carry the plan out so well ).
If you want a picture of the future, imagine a QR code stamped on a human face — forever.

But this wasn't what happened. Playing fast caused, then worsened, the lost position. I watched the game in real time, perplexed by the course of the game and the speed of Joe's play

I play too fast when I am tired. I did not realise just how consistently until I read a observation by Gelfand (I think, in one of his excellent recent books) and thought about the games I lost in league chess. I basically stop calculating and play 5 minute chess.

Gelfand noted that inability to concentrate manifests as unusually fast play in some people and unusually slow play in others. I'm definitely in group one, maybe Joe is too.

Exactly my suspicion. Joe's played a lot of chess this summer. His play yesterday looked frivolously fast, as if tired - or simply bored

surprising opening from Gawain today; I thought this was the line white played for a bloodless draw. I suppose we will see an idea

Three games showing on Chessbomb as what look like defaulted games (no time elapsed on either clock):

McDougall-De Coverly 1-0
Muir-Young 0-1
Pollack-McMichael 1-0

Anyone know what happened there?

EDIT: False alarm. All three games in progress on chess24.com's display, so clearly a Chessbomb glitch.

They seem fine on Chess24. Livechess 2 is being used at this event, and Dave and Matt are still not 100% familiar with it. It's above my skill set, but I gather that it's not quite as user friendly as Livechess 1 was.

Jones-Fodor continuing bloodlessly and Pert-Howell already drawn. The two questions that come to mind are: What else is there to do in Hull this afternoon? and Why wasn't Mickey invited?

A seismic error just played by White in Muir-Young.

Kevin (Thurlow) off the mark with a draw. Jack (Rudd)'s position slipping against the junior Ranesh Ratnesan.

Dear me! That's more Frank Muir than Andrew Muir.

And congratulations to Kevin Thurlow. Off the mark at last

Thanks - sorry it was a bit dull!

Playing hall was getting very hot today and we were both suffering.

I don't suppose the idea was to pick up the queen with a knight fork?
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

And Muir finally throws in the towel leaving Young on a very respectable 2.5/6.
With a sub 2000 rating he's not even eligible for a rating prize!
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.
