I think the removal of the tail ....
Not quite removed - there are still a number of entrants under and around 2000 elo - but the tournament field definitely looks much more balanced this year. The Major Open looks better too. These things are connected, obvs
Sorry, should have written the removal of the long tail...

Point is that the overall significantly lower numbers, and higher average strength of the field, has the practial effect of lowering the likely expected winning score.

Sure. I posted hastily. I wasn’t intending to be a pedant, more make a different point that the entry list this year looks much better than the shambles it became in recent years.

I hadn’t previously thought about the impact that the overdue cutting of the tail would have on winning score. Interesting. Would it help the stronger players (on the basis that if points are harder to get extra skill should help) or might it aid the slightly more modestly rated, relatively speaking. Eg a lower score to win may make an extra fortuitous half a point more significant?

Or does it not really matter?

PS: I’ll go for a winning score of 7.5/9. Don’t know who will get it.

Rick McMichael 8/9 outright. Maybe heart overruling head, because of family connection. However, Leicester City proved that the unthinkable can happen.

"Rick McMichael 8/9 outright"

I think he would be pleased with that! Our game did fluctuate a bit, but every time I got back into it, he created difficulties. Luckily, I like to play good opposition.

I'll vote for Adams 8/9.

Unfortunately, the DGT board you were using did not function, so I was unable to see the game. Good luck in the rest of the tournament. 7/9 would not be too shabby.....

For the millionth time, it is the spirit of fun, not really a competition to be "right"
In that case, Roger de Coverley with 7.5/9

I'll put a fiver to back Rick if someone wants to see me lose money! Can someone give me five to one? All winnings to a good charity?

I think Roger will definitely gets some points but as he's still to get off the mark after two rounds that target may be a little beyond him.

Not sure how Adams will outplay Fodor from the position at move 17. Am guessing will we see some draws from those on 2/2.

EDIT: A miniature in Zapolskis-Thurlow (1-0 in 18 moves). Even shorter game in Murphy-Tan (0-1 in 15 moves).

Which is why it is always worth trying to struggle on to move 25 just to avoid the "m" word ;-)
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

Must be something in the water today. Emms-Zakarian ended 1-0 in 22 moves, but was resignable on move 17 (games under 20 moves are 'true' miniatures, IMO).

Not 25 moves then?

Zakarian will play better than he has today.
