I think a couple of corrections are necessary about Tony's academic record. Although in his teenage years, he was travelling the country playing in tournaments as Hort recalls, he was still at school. He would have taken A Levels with a decent results as I believe he was in the frame to apply to Oxford. In the event, he studied the first year at Sheffield, took a year out and never went back to complete the course, gaining an honorary degree instead.

Tony Miles told me he has a low offer from Oxford, but kept this in reserve in case he did not get his A level grades required for Sheffield. Suffice to say the relevant Oxford college were not happy...
