Re: Remembering IM Imre König (2-ix-1901 9-ix-1992)
The BCN piece refers to Hooper and Whyld being "silent on König for some strange reason". Nothing strange about it. As their preface to the OCC made clear, they had to be selective when it came to entries about individual players. Their criterion was at least one GM norm. A middle-of-the-road IM with not many distinguished results or other particularly notable chess achievements to his credit was unlikely to make the cut. (Yes, I know, some "mere" IMs did make it in, Golombek for one. But in his case it was his large and varied body of writings, and his lengthy service as an international arbiter and on the FIDE Rules Commission that were the real reason.)
"The chess-board is the world ..... the player on the other side is hidden from us ..... he never overlooks a mistake, or makes the smallest allowance for ignorance."
(He doesn't let you resign and start again, either.)
