James Derrick Slater will be remembered for all sorts of reasons that are nothing to do with chess.

A favourite target of Private Eye (and even mentioned by Monty Python) :D

However, British and world chess benefited enormously from his sponsorship and benefaction via the Slater Foundation and his personal pocket.

The Monty Python mention was (from memory)

"Personal freedom infringed? Ring Slater-Nazi on 01-xxx-xxxx or the Department of Trade and Industry."

What many of the viewers would not have realised that the telephone number given was actually the enquiry contact number for DTI. I was impressed by this detail which would have passed many people by...
