James Derrick Slater will be remembered for all sorts of reasons that are nothing to do with chess.

A favourite target of Private Eye (and even mentioned by Monty Python)

However, British and world chess benefited enormously from his sponsorship and benefaction via the Slater Foundation and his personal pocket.
