Penrose Papers (Wellcome Library)
Quick question for the chess historians out there, is it generally known that there is a collection of chess-related materials in the L S (Lionel Sharples) Penrose Papers digitised at the Wellcome Library (though the originals are in the UCL Special Collections)?
See the following summary page:
https://wellcomelibrary.org/item/b20212859
"Notebooks and records of chess games, correspondence on chess problems, correspondence, manuscript and typescript of 'The history of the world's chess championship', newspaper cuttings of chess games, photograph."
(The photograph is from a press cutting on his son Jonathan.)
Might be of interest to some here (including some of the photographs in other parts of the collections).

That was news to me too. I have only taken a quick look.
The World Chess Championship item is a book about the 1951 Botvinnik-Bronstein match by R. G. Wade and William Winter which was published (number 27-51 in the Betts bibliography).

Useful to know for sure. JP is definitely someone to merit a biography (along with BH Wood) and of course, an autobiography from Leonard.
Is there a market for any of these? I suspect private publication is the way forward.
Years ago BCM (under Brian Reilly) would have been keen.

I think there is definitely a market for a biographical series titled "Best of Briish" featuring players like JP and Harry Golombek.

I believe that Frank Wood and his brother wrote a small volume 'The Chess Playing Woods', but I have never seen a copy.John Upham wrote: ↑Tue Nov 24, 2020 1:06 pmUseful to know for sure. JP is definitely someone to merit a biography (along with BH Wood) and of course, an autobiography from Leonard.

Coincidentally, Richmond & Twickenham Chess Club's puzzle of the week is a problem by LS Penrose.
