I've written a new post for British Chess News outlining the family background of Arthur Towle Marriott, whose chess biography I reviewed recently.

Re: The Marriott family of Nottingham
There is a little information about Arthur Towle Marriott (and some other nineteenth century Nottingham chess players with the surname Marriott) in Rob Ensor's Master's thesis (2016) which he kindly agreed to be made available on the new Nottinghamshire Chess Association website:
https://www.nottinghamshirechess.org/wp ... c.1904.pdf
See especially pp.18, 20, 71-72 for Arthur Towle Marriott and pp.16, 72, 74-75 for some of the other Marriott players.

One of my purposes in writing these articles is to put chess into its social context. I'll be concentrating mostly on my area: around Richmond and Twickenham, but also adjacent areas such as Kingston. To provide a contrast with a different part of the country I'm also looking at Leicester, my father's home town and also where I studied (like Rob at De Montfort University, although it had two other names when I was there).
