Three Points after 17 moves.

Post by Geoff Chandler » Wed Jul 07, 2021 10:28 am

Hi Chaps,

I was double checking James Aitken's opponents in the 1970 Scottish Championship when I found
out that Vernon Dilworth was unaware that the rounds one and two were played on the same day so after
his round one game he must of went sightseeing and his round two opponent, Gerald Bonner won by default.

Gerald had won his first round in game in 17 moves and was due to play Roddy McKay in round three but
Roddy slept in! So after three rounds and 17 moves Gerald Bonner's stats were P. 1 Pts. 3.

Gerald won the championship, however Aitken's report https://www.chessscotland.com/documents ... 0champ.htm
makes a good case that even without the defaults Gerald was a worthy winner. Indeed he could have agreed a draw in
the last round and still won it, but played on in a KN v KB ending to win the championship by a clear point.
