I knew Ron slightly in the 1970s. I would say he was a strong natural player, fairly corpulent, fair hair, sports jacket, spectacles. I recall having a friendly game with him and learning about the variation: 1. e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Bc4 Nxe4 4.Nc3.

I have now uploaded this and the five other games from the 1962 BCF Major Open upthread to BritBase. I think I have resolved the specific crosstable error alluded to above though I suspect others remain from the inaccurate table given in the 1962/63 BCF Yearbook. Many thanks to Gerard for contributing them.

Many thanks, Gerard - I have added this game to the BritBase collection of 1964 British Championship games. I shall have to ask Graham Chesters for his other games from this event.

Viewing the material on the site, I had not previously realised quite how convincingly Haygarth had won.

His score was 9/11. Second place were Hindle, Cafferty, Norman Littlewood and Golombek on 7.

Penrose made 6.5, scoring 4/6 in the first week and halving out in the second. Admittedly that was against Golombek, Cafferty, Hindle, Norman Littlewood and Haygarth, but perhaps you have to beat these people to become British Champion.

Lower down in the Junior events, I see the names of some of my future university contemporaries, colleagues and rivals. That incudes Bruce Birchall finishing 23rd in the under 18 with 7/13 (equal with George Botterill). Bruce was someone notorious at Cambridge as a radical playwright and activist rather than chess player.

I also see a potential local rival who retired before I was in a position to challenge him or play on an adjacent board, namely Martin Myant, equal first with 8/11 in the Under 14.

I wonder how many non-Brits follow the site?

Have you considered setting up a Foreigners Chess Forum?

There are more than enough along those lines already and none of them seem worth bothering with. Chesspub, is a waste of time and others like it aren't much better. I thought this was just about the only chess forum on the internet actually worth bothering with.

Martin Myant is about a year older than you, Roger. Our paths didn't cross at RGS High Wycombe as I didn't join the school chess club until about October 1967 and I guess he left at Xmas 1966, having won a place at Churchill College, Cambridge (though not starting there until the Michaelmas term of 1968 if the school mag is to be believed). His later career as an academic and author specialising in eastern European (particularly Czech) economics is readily discoverable online.

Myant's last chess before giving up was probably a British Championship Zonal qualifier (Middlesex, Oxfordshire, Bucks, Berks) in the early part of 1967 in which the final scores were M Macdonald-Ross 4½/6, MV Lambshire & MR Myant 4, S Reuben & PSN Kendall 2½, RH Watson 2, H Israel 1½. Two were due to qualify from this group to the British Championship but the SCCU Bulletin tells us that Myant withdrew after the Zonal so Lambshire took the second place unchallenged. An online search revealed that Myant has returned to chess in his retirement, playing league chess in Glasgow in 2022.

Thanks for the Graham Chesters games, Gerard. I have now added them to the BritBase collection.
