Thanks, Gerard.

A new item at BritBase: the games of Vera Menchik...

https://www.saund.org.uk/britbase/pgn/m ... iewer.html

This collection of Vera Menchik's chess games has 569 game entries of which 448 are complete scores and 12 are part-games. I have made two PGN files available for download, one of which includes all game entries (including stubs); the other excludes stubs.

I am grateful to Brian Denman for his help with this project; he made available to me the collection of games which he had made in collaboration with Tony Gillam.

I don't have the Robert Tanner book on Vera Menchik published by McFarland but I believe it has 350 complete games. The 2022 Mega/Big Database has 416 game entries of which 330 are complete scores. Chessgames dot com has 314 complete scores. So BritBase is well ahead of the competition...

Apologies.

As recompense can I offer you the immortal double rook blunder game?

Many thanks again, Gerard. I've added that game to the collection at BritBase...

1947 British Championships, Harrogate

Some of the newspaper and magazine cuttings I've posted on that page might be of wider interest as they exemplify the tension between the chess establishment (in the persons of Hugh Alexander and Stuart Milner-Barry) and the editor of CHESS, BH Wood, who could be seen as the unofficial 'leader of the opposition' at the time.

I assume the second H. E. Atkins game was played on 14.02.1914 - reported in the Huddersfield Daily Examiner, Monday 16 February 1914 p.3 - as I can't find an other occasion where this game could have taken place.

However the 1991 chess editor did not date it and seems to have taken it from R. N. Coles' book on Atkins - which I do not have.

The simul game was unusual as his first opponent had to leave early and the game was taken up by another. Is this the first example of 'tag-chess'?

Thanks for those games, Gerard. The second one was already on file but tentatively dated 1918, which I was never happy with. Your suggested date seems more likely. I don't have the Nevil Coles book either, I'm afraid.

Maybe White was so disappointed that his 18. Ncxe5 Nxe6+ cheapo failed, that he missed the threat to his own queen? :D

EDIT: 22.Kd1 seems a bit strange. Surely something like 22.Rf3 was a better try, but maybe White had given up already.

Many thanks for those games, Gerard. Duly added to BritBase...

1906 British Championship
1960/61 Hastings
1961 British Championship

I'm currently working on the Yorkshire Evening Post newspaper columns of Ronnie Ives, kindly lent to me by Ingrid Ives, with a view to making them available on BritBase. It's a time-consuming task and it will be some time before it is completed, but here's a taster - a brevity played in 1959 between two players who have still been active recently, at least until the pandemic, and one of whom is a member of the forum. Connoisseurs of the Elephant Gambit may find it of interest...
