And of course Matulovic, who served some jail time for "vehicular manslaughter" c1970.

I think there was a English chap (whose name I do know) arrested in Norway at a tournament caught in a toilet cubicle with a young man. He is also a poker player.
Do you mean Czechia and contract bridge?
Nope, A Norwegian junior tournament and he is now a poker player (seems appropriate).

A reminder...
Controversy as 'Mastermind' bank robber joins chess broadcast

Norway's most infamous bank robber, known as the mastermind behind the biggest heist in the country's history, will join as a guest during TV 2's Tata Steel Chess broadcast. The controversial move has made headlines and provoked strong reactions. Hours after the announcement, one sponsor decided to pull out of the show.

Was John N. Walker (Oxford) arrested or did he hand himself in?

Not forgetting Kasparov. He's been behind bars before but I can't remember what it was for, it was either being an outspoken critic of Putin or playing the King's Indian Defence more than most.

I can think of several ordinary club players who have been arrested/convicted over the years. Certainly there was one well-known official who murdered his wife.

And when in the clink he was visited by none other than his old sparring partner Karpov.

Yes, who I believe brought him a chess magazine to read. Whether or not he was gloating, we will never really know. Hard to believe he felt sorry for him after all these years but you never know.

Actually, it is likely that he did.

Karpov at least no longer had pretensions to be WC at that point, so could give his old rival more of the respect that he actually deserved.

There was a player arrested for a bomb hoax on an airplane last year.
