Jonathan Penrose permanent web celebration

Post by David York » Sun Jul 30, 2023 1:57 pm

The late Grandmaster Dr Jonathan Penrose OBE would have been 90 years old on 7 October 2023. To celebrate his life in chess a Jonathan Penrose Chess Park (public chess tables) is being opened in Colchester, where he was born.

The 7 October opening event features a simul by GM Michael Adams, who today won his 8th British Chess Championship. It is at Colchester Town Hall and is in aid of the Mayor’s Charities – a range of causes selected annually by each new Colchester mayor.

The tables in the chess park will carry a link to a permanent web page hosted by Colchester's Mercury Theatre. The purpose of this post is to ask members of this forum to contribute any related material that could form part of that web celebration.

Do you have any photograps?
Have you personal memories you could share?
Have you annotated any relevant games?
Have you written articles you could grant permission to use?

I will, of course, trawl old posts on the forum.

Many thanks in advance.

He's before my time, so I can't really add anything from experience but I can put forwards that it is indeed commendable that his life is celebrated in such fashion.

Do we have a favourite Penrose game? I like how he once defeated Tal. https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1105990

Out of curiosity, how many world champions did Penrose beat?

Pretty sure that was the only time he did.

He had the better of a draw with Fischer at the 1960 Olympiad, but lost most of his other games against Soviet WCs.

With regards to the game you mentioned against Fischer, he was most certainly ahead materially, but was he more than +1 up? Good game though.

Forgot about Euwe of course, Penrose led 2-1 in wins against him though his triumphs came in 1960-62 when Max was past his best.
