Michael J Warner 1941-81

Michael Warner of Varndean Grammar School in Brighton was a strong player, who received a letter from the governors of his school dated 17th July 1959 congratulating him on being selected for the English Glorney Cup team. The BCM of September 1959 (page 263) lists individual results for England's wins against Wales and Ireland (Scotland did not compete) and states that all matches were played over seven boards, but only the top six counted for the Glorney Cup. Unfortunately the BCM only gives the results over six boards and Michael's daughter, Sue, has queried whether Michael could have been the seventh player in both cases. At the moment there is no proof that he was actually there. I was wondering if anyone possessed 'Chess' for 1959 and, if so, could they look to see if the identity of the seventh player is disclosed. Thanks, Brian

I was pleased to receive a reply from Michael Sharpe of Canada, which has provided me with an answer to this query. The relevant page in 'Chess' gives all of the results for the Glorney Cup in 1959 and proves that Michael Warner did not take part in the event. His daughter, Sue, will probably be disappointed at this and the fact that we have no explanation for his absence, but she can take pride in the fact that he was selected for the team in the first place.
