A Rook on the 7th.

I have to admit to being more interested in seeing old cartoons from many moons ago such as the first one I posted.

I guess I need to scour CHESS and BCM to find them.

I hope you like this charming cartoon from January 14th, 1937 published in CHESS, volume 1, page 161

Unfortunately I have lost my note of where this Bateman cartoon was published. Maybe somebody can supply?

When I was researching my PhD (around 20 years ago now) I collected several more historical chess cartoons that are not on my present computer so I shall have to hunt in old backups to see if I still have scans of them.

I had kept this one as a cutting inside a book.

I can't find the exact date, but several auction sites and collections suggest that it was published in Punch in 1918-19.

I found this one of General Roberts and Kruger from the time of the Boer War.

It was an advertisement in the Illustrated London News, and I think the reference is 7th April 1900, page 491.
