BMD gives Genine(sic) Fielding born Huddersfield Q3 1953 - that must be her.

Haven't found anything very convincing for the others yet.

Ron/Robin Moss - chessgames.com and ChessBase give under Robin Moss a game from the British U15s in 1962 and some games from the late 90s. According to both FIDE and the ECF/BCF Master List, Robin Moss was born in 1964.

I've looked on Friends Reunited and found a 'Genine Fielding' (note spelling) who is "living in Huddersfield, married with two children" and went to Fartown Secondary Modern School, which is (or was) located in Wasp Nest Road, Birkby, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Friends Reunited doesn't give married names, of course. Together with Richard's BMD look-up, that must be game, set and match, I think.

I'll change her spelling, add 'Matthew Watson' and confirm 'Ron Moss'...

I've found three MJ Neaves born in the first half of 1953: Martin J Neave (Islington), Michael J Neave (King's Lynn) and another Michael J Neave (Aldershot). Nothing much else in the right period so I would guess one of these.

How about 1943?! (a dubious comment).

Gordon Campbell b1951 Birkenhead or Graham M Campbell b1952 Birkenhead are possible, more likely the former as no middle initial.

Malcolm N Walsh b1947 Pontypool is the only MN Walsh in the right period. Not the right area, but he might have moved.

Ron Moss died about 4 years ago and was an ICL/Bracknell player. His colleague, Barry Byrne, told me so.

Horrible story! But as the guy there was 57 in 2004 (six years ago), and this R. Moss was the 1962 U15 champion, that would be 42 plus his age in 1962, which to make him 57 would be, er, 15. I've suddenly gone right off this thread. :(

And Bracknell is in Berkshire, which tallies with another snippet of information.

I did a search for "Moss" on these forums and came up with two posts by Paul McKeown with questions about opponents of Bob Wade in the 1970s.

http://www.ecforum.org.uk/viewtopic.php ... wade#p7172

"16) R Moss (Berks) (3 Mar 1979)"

http://www.ecforum.org.uk/viewtopic.php ... wade#p7030

1978-79 season: "R Moss (Berks.)"

Is ICL "International Computers Limited"? It seems to be the name of a computer company, now owned by Fujitsu, that had a large site in Bracknell, and there are lots of references to a chess club called "ICL (Bracknell)", that club is presumably connected in some way with the company.

While looking for stuff on ICL and chess, I found this:

http://www.creating-purpose.co.uk/chess ... ons-school

The biography of V. J. Dunleavy (1929-2008), mainly about chess, but also detailing his career with ICL.

ICL Bracknell was used as a venue for County matches by Berkshire many years ago. I remember it being a dry venue (no bar) so you had to win quickly if you wanted a pint.

A mention of A Mortlock here:
http://www.brightonandhovechessclub.org ... k3_Ch6.htm
The Brighton Technical College (also called Brighton Students) proved to be the surprise team of the late 1930s. The Students appear to have first entered the McArthur Cup in the 1935-6 season and they are known to have played in the last competition before World War II. Their greatest achievement came in 1937, when they won the trophy.

The Principal of the college, Dr W. Mansergh Varley, built up a strong team which combined his own experience with the talents of some promising young players. He himself was greatly respected in local chess circles, having in the past carried out the administrative duties of secretary and treasurer of the Sussex Chess Association. In 1929 he had reached the final of the county championship, losing against Wallace King of Hastings.

In the 1935-6 season the Students fielded the strong Hastings player A. Mortlock on top board...
C.H. Stacey
Charles Stacey enjoyed a remarkable run of success during the 1930s. In 1932 he lost in the county championship final against A.J. Mackenzie of Hastings, but in 1933 won the title after defeating another Hastings player, A. Mortlock, at the final stage. In 1934 he retained his title by defeating Arthur Winser in the final, only to lose to the same player a year later at the same stage of the competition. In 1936 he won the title for the third time after again defeating A. Mortlock in the final.

Almost redundant now, but I've had a reply suggesting 'Janine' for Miss Fielding. This was from memory. He was going to try to contact the co-champion but I didn't think that was necessary.

How frustrating that no-one gives Mortlock's first name.

I'd suggested Alfred as a possibility earlier in the thread as he was at school in Hastings and there was an Alfred Mortlock who married and died in Hastings much later. The death certificate gives his d.o.b. as 12 July 1910, so, if the qualification criterion was under 18 the previous 1 September this would fit.

Brian Denman may know or be able to find out: I'll try to contact him.

Richard James wrote:A possible for Mortlock:

Alfred Mortlock, born 1910, died September 1999 in Hastings. He married Katherine M Hare, again in Hastings, in 1977. A family tree mistakenly gives his death date as 1977. The only birth record for Alfred Mortlock in 1910 was in Worcestershire.
This seems to the death notice of the Hastings Alfred Mortlock:
MORTLOCK, Alfred
Northern Hotel, Sea Road, Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex. Bank Official (Retired).

[Date of death] 31st August 1999.
