I believe you are correct in both cases.
Of course, George remains active in the Blackpool area chess scene. Fred was a fellow member of Poulton-le-Fylde CC in the 1970s and 80s.
Fred is still an active member of 'Upper Killay Chess Club', which I believe is near Swansea. His rating details can be found here:

If when you see him you could confirm whether he is indeed the F. Clough who played Sergeant in the 1959 Championship, that would be good. Thanks.

Sorry, I didn't read this until after I'd beaten him. From his age and the way my club mates were speaking of him I'm fairly certain he is the F. Clough in question. I also believe he's a member of the British Correspondence Chess Association if that helps?

It was done within an hour of the game actually - they all are. Match cards are sent to the league sec' to update the tables and to the grading officer to update the rating.

Yes, it is. One of his fellow members at Poulton-le-Fylde confirmed his participation in that particular British Championship (and a few others) back in the 1980s.

Born in the same year as Korchnoi, good to see him too still going strong

I had reason to research Malcolm Firth today. Whatever happened to him?
But while doing so, I realised that EG Sergeant is a Morphy 2. That means I am a Morphy 3 as I played him in 1955 when 16. I played a fair amount in the US and thus would have made all my opponents Morphy 4.
