When the BCF turned into the ECF in 2004, the English Chess Association wasn't mentioned at all - it was thought to be defunct.

However I can now advise that the ECA wasn't dead, it was, in fact, undead. A plague of zombie chess players, the 5000 members of the ECA, were about to be released into an unsuspecting world just waiting for a signal on the radio - the voice of their creators!

For those of you unconvinced by this synopsis, I suggest you look at the names of the two radio announcers in the cast list of the film below hidden amongst those of the creatures:-

Good heavens

Luckily our good friends at Streatham & Brixton generated their own zombie as a pre-emptive strike a few years ago:

I have now found somebody who welcomed the English Chess Association, although without naming it. On page 371 of the September 1988 British Chess Magazine Stewart Reuben wrote:

"There is no doubt we now have too many players seeking too few opportunities to make a living or play in strong events. Playing in the German Bundesliga reduces the financial problem for some. The recent initiatives by The Association of British Chessmasters and Ray Keene's new organisation must be welcomed. Eventually the problem will solve itself."
