Does anybody know who the competitors were in this? I know Bruno Parma won it, but I'm struggling to find a crosstable: Chessgames has one for 1957, not not 1961. (Contemporary magazines? Kazic?)

The name of the English representative was unknown to me, but he played in the Student Olympiad in both 1962 and 1963 in both cases on board 2 behind Adrian Hollis on 1.

Modern nationality designations are shown, the winner, Parma, would have been from Yugoslavia. Dr Pfleger is from West Germany, there's not positive confirmation of the inclusion or exclusion of an East German representative.

Yes, Kuettner was East German. Diekstra: Netherlands. Larusson: Iceland. Maalouf: Lebanon. Markus: Switzerland. Rischette: Luxembourg.

Hort (then Czechoslovakia) finished in a 4-way tie for 1st place in his preliminary group, missing out on a place in the finals on tie break, and didn't play in the second section of the finals. Raymond Weinstein had entered but was apparently too old.

Played D.A. Smith in the British U-21 championship in 1961. We agreed a draw after 35 moves. If Adrian Hollis was on board. 1, that would be correct, since I seem to remember Adrian winning the U-21 Championship.

As Justin speculated, International Championship Chess by Bozidar Kažić (Batsford, 1974, pp. 275-277) has a crosstable of the Final A and summary results of the preliminary groups, Final B and Final C. I can scan the relevant pages later today if that would be helpful. (Richard James may have used the same source, in which case this may be redundant.)

The games are all on BigBase/MegaBase so I was able to generate crosstables.

(If your brain does that sort of thing you'll notice that the Swedish representative's name is KRAMNNIK in reverse.)

The crucial game for Hort was his last-round encounter with Zuidema, which he only needed to draw to qualify for the top final. Instead of taking it steady, he tried to wipe his opponent off the board with an early piece sac. Alas, an error allowed Zuidema to force the queens off and eventually win an exhausting 90-mover of R+B+hP against R+gP+hP. Definitely one for endgame fanatics!

One wonders whether that defeat was traumatic enough to be the cause of his apparent withdrawal.
