I found another Edwardian advertisement (from the Illustrated London News of 7 April 1900) and put it up on my website.

I don't think the position makes much sense but maybe some of you can work it out?

I have found no evidence for the existence of Mr Henry H. Hughes as a chess player - or even an Aldershot Chess Club. I'm now beginning to doubt the efficacy of Bile Beans themselves.

41, ALbert Road, Aldershot exists.

Maybe we should go around there and screw a blue plague to the wall.

Is this the origin of, 'A plague on both your houses'?

Continued to be sold into the 1980s, according to that article. Anybody ever come across them?

:)

Plaque!

God alone knows what I typed to get it changed to plague.

Auto spell checker nearly got me lynched.

I was writing about a museum guide and how unhelpful he was.

'The Museum guide was next to useless' .

I must have spelt museum wrong because it got changed to Muslim.

It fitted into here. I deleted the whole section and re-posted.

https://www.redhotpawn.com/chess-blog/t ... cdotes.252

The guide was all full of himself spouting all kinds of nonsense.

(He was Polish, I think a guide in a Scottish museum should have a Scots accent or at least wear a kilt.)

Eventually I had had enough and asked him if he was there.

"No"

Then this is all hearsay. I then added that I think Scott and what was
left of his crew killed Titus Oates because he was slowing them up.

I was reminded that Oates was a soldier, a hero. I stated that he was leaving
out the bit about Oates getting a 12 year old girl pregnant.

Gasps of horror from the crowd. I told them to Google it.

https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2002/oct ... humanities

A minor tit-for-tat followed with me being asked to leave the group.

I explored the ship (The Discovery) by myself collecting on the way some strange looks from the rest of the party.

There must be an Aldershot Chess Club. You guys are not looking properly.

I bet they have an annual tournament for the Henry H. Hughes Trophy.

(winner gets a can of Bile Beans.)

Titus Oates was the man behind the fake "Popish Plot" to kill Charles II in the 17th century.

You are thinking of Lawrence Oates, I believe.

No, this is quite correct in its way. One of Lawrence Oates' nicknames was 'Titus' after the 17th century original. He was also known as 'soldier' as unlike the majority of the expedition he was drawn from the army rather than the navy.

[Though politically at an opposite end of the spectrum from him I do feel a surprising empathy. Perhaps from having played him in the play 'Terra Nova'.]

Yeah 'Titus' or 'Soldier' was his nickname.

I told the guide I thought he was done in just to get him going...it worked!

It began inside the museum when I started asking questions (basically telling him he was wrong.)

On the ship I asked him which mast Bonner fell from. (so I could look for the dent.)
He never knew nothing about it. Said I was wrong. (Me....wrong!)

As they were leaving Harbour a crowd gathered to cheer them off, this lad called Bonner
climbed a mast to wave back and fell. It's well documented.

That is a fact and he knew nothing about it. It all went tits up from there.

If I do not have a confrontation of sorts anywhere then I considered it a day wasted.

Just following up the issue of whether an Aldershot Chess Club existed. I lived in Aldershot from 1950 to 1969 and there was certainly no chess club in the town at that time. The only historical link is to an Aldershot Services Chess Club set up during the Second World War for Army personnel but this seems to have shut down after 1945.

The local chess League (Surrey Borders) in the 1960s had teams from Farnham, Guildford and Godalming together with two teams with an industrial base in Farnborough; the Royal Aircraft Establishment team (including research staff dealing with aeronautics) and Solartron, an electronics company. There was no Farnborough Chess Club at that time, although a Fleet and Farnborough team now plays in the league.

I attended Farnborough Grammar School for Boys from 1955 until 1963 and played for the school chess team which competed against other local grammar schools. Due to keen teachers, we were comparatively very strong and came to the notice of these two clubs, against whom we played on a friendly basis. As a result I and one other boy from Aldershot were invited to play for Solartron in the Surrey Borders League in the 1961-62 ansd 1962-63 seasons with satisfactory performances. Although the RAE is still going, it does not have a team in the Surrey Borders now and Solartron is no longer in existence.

As Geoff Chandler states, Albert Road in Aldershot does exist, but along with others I doubt whether Mr Hughes existed.

I can say with certainty that an Aldershot Chess Club was playing in the Border League in the 1982/83 and 1983/84 seasons, because I played against them. The league records show that Aldershot won Division 2 in the 1983/84 season.
