ULU Chess Club late 1980's

Post by Roland Kensdale » Wed May 09, 2018 1:57 pm

Does anyone remember who ran the ULU Chess Club 1988-89 - probably for many years either side of this.

Think he could have been Mike - but no idea of surname.

Not really Chess history but Chess related, and it is in the past !

Probably won't help, but does ULU stand for University of London Union?

Apparently "London, ULU" was the venue for the Varsity Matches in the 1960s:

Yes, ULU was the University of London Union - google tells me it is now called Student Central.

They used to run clubs for all/most London University Colleges.

Might the University of London keep records of this sort of thing? Unlikely, but might be worth asking.

I was there mid 90's and helped run the club. I dont recall anyone named Mike being involved then (or just before i arrived). While i was there i did notice some old match scores in the club's locker that might have helped you identify the name you are looking for, although as that was 20 years ago, they would probably have been thrown out by now.

Maybe there are some other members from the 80's floating around on these boards who might know? (it was way before my time so i could be completely wrong, but I think Malcolm Pein and Shaun Talbot may have played for ULU at some point?)

Was the 'Mike' a mature student called Mike Gordini? He studied Post Grad Japanese at SOAS in the late 70s.
