Do not play at chess with a ...

I came across this in the Cumberland &Westmorland Herald Saturday 14 August 1880. It seems to be a precursor of Nelson Algren's "three rules of life":

"Never play cards with a man called Doc. Never eat at a place called Mom's. Never sleep with a woman whose troubles are worse than your own."

I prefer the ones below, which are mostly self-explanatory and need no updating. For my part, I have never told a living soul that I dye my whiskers - and never shall.

However why shouldn't you play 'at' chess with a widow?
