Open suggestion to CH :

Can you create a Forum for the discussion of technical chess type queries?

It would make a good addition to all the heavy political stuff that mostly appears IMHO.

I realise ChessPublishing.Com exists for this type of stuff but it would be good for this forum and might attract some new blood.

To kick it off, I would post a 46 page article about the well-known Popov/Larsen/Sowray variation of the Alekhine's Defence, which I wrote about a year and a half ago, but never sent for publication, although I'm sure its of a sufficiently high standard.

Come up with a name and a simple description for the home page and this can be organised

as the title

and

Openings, Middlegames, Endings etc.

as the description.

I'm glad you were laughing, John, but no, 1. e4 Sf6 2. Lc4?! is not a move I have ever spent a lot of time considering: it's not really sound - and worse for White, the ideas behind it are rather transparent, so Black is not likely to fall for anything. At least I won't. Actually, the Blackmar-Diemer, for instance, is more dangerous (if even less sound - I just loved Andy Martin describing it as "Shopping for a Tombstone"), because White just gets on with developing his pieces to good squares and just waits to see what mistakes Black will make, whereas this 2. Lc4 move just forces things too much.

No. Lluben Popov and some Bulgarians invented the idea of 1. e4 Sf6 2. e5 Sd5 3. d4 d6 4. Sf3 dxe5 5. Sxe5 Sd7in the early 60's, Larsen famously dared it against Tal', but it was England's very own Pete Sowray who did most of the theoretical groundwork which got people playing it from time to time. Sadly some careless Russian GM (with cybernetic assistance) has now comprehensively busted it. The article tells the story; the first serious article I have ever written about a chess opening - and how I now have had to give it up, never to play it again.

I do like Andys Videos. Sambuca Sharks use to ocassionally stick one of 3 videos we have lying around the house on. Only one is Andys, the Czech Benoni video but we quote from it as a joke etc when we play the opening.

I love the Evans Gambit, The Fryed Liver(spelling) and the Lowenthal Sicillean as quick attacking lines which dont directly lose.

Doubt it, Ben, who would want to play a line that has been comprehensively holed below the water line? All people will be interested in is the torpedo... I worry that this is going to be only the first of many marginal opening lines that are going to be cybernetically trashed over the coming years...

I always did love running around with my (Black) king on a4 or somewhere else equally ludicrous for the opening!

Andy I would argue me , cod and sam have watched the video more times than any other person on earth. We all played the opening for years, cod still does.

Sharks use to have Joe Redpath in our side who was famous for playing Czech system alot V Motwani in Scottish Tournaments.

Ben, I think you mean the Czech Pirc (rather than Czech Benoni) as played by Vlastimil Jansa and the dastardly Pribyl brothers (they used to hit each other with clubs on Wacky Races ).

The Emms - Hodgson game is hilarious : I'd love to have seen Emms reaction when Julian played f5!

What an imaginative player Julian was and how we miss him...
