objectively best, then?

Practically you could argue it either way. Black might get mated if he isn't careful. On the other hand, one is tempted to play a tactic which one suspects the opponent has overlooked, and in such a case the opponent may not be able to bring himself to believe in the attack.

Well, 15.c4 just seems to drop a pawn.

Going for f4-f5 is probably the thematic way to open it up, but it'll be tricky to achieve. I think you're just slightly worse there.

Where?
At the point where you played 15.c4, dropping a pawn. I think the position after black's 14th is slightly better for black, and so attempts to wrest the initiative will backfire.

It might be as late as this position, where playing .. e3 falls into the Qxe3 trick.

(edit) Not so sure now I've noticed the threat of Qf2 (/edit)

No, it's already gone by then, surely. There's no other move that gives a hope of stopping Qf2 and Rf8+.

I wonder why my trainer told me 5...Bxc3 is good, or have I got it wrong?

Your trainer is Sniper author Charlie Storey?

Giving up the g7 Bishop on c3 is a controversial idea. It creates positions that are difficult to play, That's why people play it, to make life difficult for White as well as Black.

I had training sessions with an IM a few times, in th past. He told me you can play Bxc3 in Benoni, but not wxactly when.

Exactly when to play Bg7 takes Nc3 is for the player to decide based on concrete considerations - only guidance can be given by trainers, and their like.

E.g. Bacrot-Speelman 1998 Elista Ol. (Notes by Jon Speelman in "modern defence" by Speelman & N. McDonald)

1.d4 g6 2.c4 Bg7 3.Nc3 c5 4.d5 f5!? "... very playable at club level... foolhardy to repeat internationally. There's something to 4.... Bxc3!? 5.bxc3 and then 5... f5 to forestall 5.Qc2... but with the game move order W has at least been induced by his opponent's structural profligacy with 4... f7-f5 to spend - or if B is grossly optimistic 'waste' - a tempo to preserve his own. 5.h4!? (5.Qc2 is prudent) 5... Bxc3 6.bxc3 Nf6 7.h5 Rg8! Essential..."

Vintage Speelman at work and at play. He won the game.
