"Motif" might be more appropriate in this context?

John Nunn once used the mathematical term "diagonalise" to describe the effect of a Bishop pair working on adjacent diagonals. The term Harrwitz Bishops is also used.

Sacrificing on f2 or f7 to draw the King out into the open is also a frequent enough idea. The first sacrifice in the opening that many players learn is 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5 d5 5. exd5 Nxd5 6. Nxf7 Kxf7 7. Qf3+ Ke6

Its about deflecting the rook from the defence of the B on b7, without which the combination would not work.

You could correct it yourself to -

Why did he do so?

However, in doing so you would lose your trademark foreign delivery and sound too much like an honourary Englishman.

"However, in doing so you would lose your trademark foreign delivery and sound too much like an honourary Englishman."

Or even "honorary". "Honor" is American, "honour" is English, but "honorary" is both... Anybody would think we want to confuse people.

What's the motif?

I think you have to see that sacrificing the exchange on e5 allows the pseudo sacrifice on g6, after which, subject to correctly calculating the forcing lines, White will break through.
