Well, there is a strategic idea behind ...e4 as well: if white ignores it, he will be left with a weak pawn on f3 or d3 after black exchanges pawns.

What's this combination based on?

I know that the Black Bishop got overworked in the end, but could you so eaily sacrifice 2 pawns?

It's a forced line, so once you see the underlying idea of getting Rc5 in to hit d5 as well, it's just a matter of calculation.

That just requires the vision to see the KxQ Bg5++ idea. Very cute :)

Black is still the exchange down, although for the pawn, yet winning.

Presumably Jones thought it the best move. It threatens to play Bb2 controlling the a1 h8 diagonal.

Can anyone suggest a better move?

"Presumably Jones thought it the best move. It threatens to play Bb2 controlling the a1 h8 diagonal."

And it protects the knight in case a later ....d5 causes problems.

Stockfish8 reckons 11 b3 and 11 Bd2 are equal with 11 Nxc5 only marginally better.

More to the point, probably, is that Gawain and Nils seem to be good friends. Also this was round one in a big event for both of them. Hence White allowing a sac for perpetual early on. When they met at Reykjavik (with reversed colours) another drawish line arose. A draw was agreed in 30 moves (the shortest allowed) and not much time.

What's the motive for this combination?

The motive is that black wants to win. Are you sure that is the word you want?
