International Round Up 18/02/10

Aeroflot Open
http://www.aeroflotchess.com/

Luke McShane played in Tournament A1 and finished on 5/9 performing at 2646. He played against 7 GMs and 2 IMs (who were both rated around 2500) and probably the pick of his results was a draw with black against Gata Kamsky where Luke was pressing in an ending. He also had several long games including the marathon 148 move win against Marie Sebag in round five. It’s great to see Luke back playing chess full time and this continues his excellent run of results since his return six months ago.

Michael Yeo played in Tournament C and scored 5.5/9.

The English challenge is led by GM Mark Hebden and also includes Andrew Whiteley, Philip Tozer, Gerald Parfett and juniors Sam Franklin, George O'Toole, Joe Quinn, Ravi Haria and Isaac Sanders.
After six rounds Hebden is on 4.5/6, O'Toole & Tozer 3.5, Franklin, Haria, Parfett & Sanders 3, Quinn & Whiteley 2.5.

Sean Hewitt organised eight 10 player all-play-alls comprising 2 IM norm sections and six other rated all-play-alls. Players included 2008 joint English & British Champion Grandmaster Keith Arkell and England international Grandmaster Danny Gormally. I was also pleased to see that four of our promising juniors Yang Fan Zhou, James Adair, Martin Brown and Radha Jain all competed.

The list of winners were as follows:

IM events:

Alekhine: http://www.e2e4.org.uk/international/20 ... ekhine.htm

1st GM Danny Gormally 7.5/9 2nd IM Mohamed Tissir 6

Martin Brown scored 3.5/9 gaining 20 rating points and defeating FM Peter Poobalasingam and IM Jack Rudd. Peter Poobalasingam was one of the favourites to make an IM norm but despite a great start of 2.5/3 against the GM and 2 IMs had a run of 0.5/4 against the lower rated players which knocked him out of contention.

Morphy: http://www.e2e4.org.uk/international/20 ... morphy.htm

1st GM Keith Arkell 7/9 2nd Rafal Tymrakiewicz 6.5 3rd GM Colin McNab & IM John Cox 6 English juniors James Adair & Yang-Fan Zhou both scored 4.5

Congratulations to Rafal Tymrakiewicz who secured a well deserved IM norm in the Alekhine event and also took his rating over 2300 which allows him to claim the FM title if he wishes to.
