Stuart Fancy was not popular in the early 1970s.
With whom?
With whom?

I think his policy of removing Scotland from FIDE has proved reasonably unpopular North of the border.

His policy of allowing Russia and Belarus to compete at the Olympiad has not met with universal approval either.

As I have said, I do not wish to elaborate.
On reflection, I ought not to have made the post in the first place. However, the subsequent enquiries precluded my simply deleting it.

Fancy is a member of some Trotskyist group, isn't he? Or used to be, anyway.

As I intend to stand again for FIDE Supremo I'll present my manifesto.
Only one FIDE tournament a year open to top 100 rated players. An all play
all 99 rounder, no rest days so it will take three and a bit months to complete.
The winner will be the Champion of everything.
(also move FIDE headquarters to Orkney because I think I'd like to live there.)

You'd get my vote. In fact, if you consider moving the HQ to Skye then I'll stand on the ticket with you!

The statements I've seen attributed to him don't suggest any private enthusiasm for the Ukraine adventure but, even if that's so, it's a big ask to expect him to say so publicly.
I thought he stuck his neck out by saying "
My thoughts are with Ukrainian civilians... Wars do not just kill priceless lives. Wars kill hopes and aspirations, freeze or destroy relationships and connections". This was in a
piece which I think was previously cited on this forum.
Also, worth mentioning is that Dvorkovich was Deputy Prime Minister of Russia for six years.
I think Angus's post suggests, albeit unintentionally, that Dvorkovich was
the Deputy Prime Minister for those six years when in fact there were 8 or 9 DPMs for most of the period - one of whom, not Dvorkovich, was First DPM. Closest equivalent in the present UK government would, I think, be Kwasi Kwarteng being the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. I'm not suggesting that either of these gentlemen occupied an unimportant role but neither was/is number 2 or 3 in their respective governments. Incidentally, the end of those six years wasn't a case of Dvorkovic "(falling out of favour in some way and was sacked)" - and here I'm referring to Nick's post - but of the entire Medvedev government terminating.

I'll stay with my view.

Since nobody else has mentioned it, there has been news over the weekend.

Fumey is a plausible candidate, for whom the ECF might consider voting, but I am unsure as to what Stuart Fancy brings as his running mate. I don't think he is popular outside a small part of Asia, and he opened his campaign by being very rude about Europe.
edit : On reflection, an African who lives in Canada and a European who lives in Papua New Guinea might seem to cover all bases.

In other FIDE news, there's a deal to enable the winner of the "Grand Chess Tour" to qualify for the Candidates.

The top two, in fact. That does look to be potentially huge news.

- Presumably the FIDE Grand Prix (and its 2 qualifying spots) will disappear.
- As the Grand Chess Tour includes fast-play events, is FIDE pivoting towards a new format for the World Championship Match?
- And will that in turn change Carlsen's mind about resigning his title?

I was wondering if a rival commercial organisation being close to FIDE might make Magnus less likely to defend his title

Returning to the topic of the thread, we now know the Dvorkovich ticket ( yes, despite whatever may have been sent to whomever following the ECF Council vote, he is still standing ).

I am personally looking forward to the public debate between the rival candidates for the position of Deputy President, Vishy Anand and Stuart Fancy.
