Always a risk going into a "theoretically drawn" ending that nonetheless still has play in it.

Well done to Gukesh all the same, and as happened last year the winner clinched it with their only Black triumph.

You can see where the blunder came from. It was only because the bishop exchange was forced (because the White bishop was in the corner on a8) that it was a win. Still traumatic for Ding. That blunder will enter the folklore of WCC history...

So the departing WC made a minus score in all his events whilst the title holder. On a happier note (though still cold comfort for Ding just now) he will actually gain rating points for the first time since the last match.

So the departing WC made a minus score in all his events whilst the title holder. On a happier note (though still cold comfort for Ding just now) he will actually gain rating points for the first time since the last match.

And he said at the press conference he will continue to play, let's hope so, and wish him good health

The reaction of one set of commentators (Leko and Naroditsky) was classic as they saw the evaluation bar explode.

It was painful to see, but also fascinating to see the reaction of Gukesh as he checked... and double-checked, and drank some water, and then checked again.

Top grinding by gukesh, people have been a bit disparaging of his conversion technique over the course of this championship but he managed to finally put enough pressure on ding this time to break though at the very last.

And, yes it's sad to see things decided by a blunder but at least the blunder was made in a classical game and not some sort of messy rapid tiebreaker.
