Yeah but the extra day on top of the 3 to 4 weeks it takes them at the moment to complete the job won't make too much difference ;)
Do I interpret this as you volunteering to help out?
Certainly not, I wouldn't want to deny you the obvious, if perverse, enjoyment you get out of the job. And who knows, with a lot more practice you might manage to get a bit quicker as well :D

He's done pretty well at Sunningdale. All 5 rounds from the Open and Major are keyed in and online. :D

Interesting incident at the start of round 6. Player approaches me at 10.25 and says that he was late for his game but that when he got to his board someone else was already playing his game. Seems that another player was also late and, seeing a board with a player missing he just sat there and started playing, only to find that he was at the wrong board!

When that player was told and diverted to the correct board, he even asked if he could have the 10 minutes back on the clock that he had spent playing the wrong game!

Simply because he asked for a bye in each of rounds 4 and 6. We allow all players to take up to three 1/2 point byes in any of the first 6 rounds. In fact, if you look you will see that Colin is not the only player to take two byes and at least oe player has had three. So yes, this is perfectly normal.

Thanks John. I would like to thank each of the 172 players who made it, I think, the best event that we have run so far.

All results are now online

Open
Major
Minor

Together with pgn files from all 7 rounds of both the open and the major.

Enjoy.

Long in more ways than one. I enjoyed the weekend and the chess as always, but I think my game was the last to finish in both rounds 6 and 7, so I was playing chess from 10:00 to around 19:20 with only a half hour break between 14:30 and 15:00. The games were 85 and 74 moves (draw and loss).

It wasn't as tiring as it sounds, but both games were swinging back and forth and I probably played about 20-40 moves in each game where both players were down to only a few minutes each, which at 30 seconds/move has a peculiar tension all of its own (different from the tension of a blitz/rapidplay finish). Enjoyable for spectators, but horrible as a player when some little problem crops up and you only have a few minutes to try and work out the variations.

Does anyone have any tips for how to play chess at 30s/move when you are down to less than 3 minutes? I find myself using up most of the time towards the end of a game trying to avoid blunders, because I know that at this time control the opponent will be able to finish off the game if you blunder. But then the resulting time shortage itself starts to induce blunders. And you can't take a break and may have to sit at the board for a long time before the game is finished in some endgames. Time torture, rather than time scramble, is what I've started calling it.

Oh, and as Mike says, many thanks to all who organised and helped with the event.

PS. I had a look at the Arkell miniature from round 1 (Open), which was very nice. Not all my games were long, and in the same vein I won a 19-move miniature in round 4 (Major). In fact, there were quite a few miniatures. Is it possible to get a list of all the games that were 20 or 25 moves or less?

As I can't be bothered to edit it into a list, here's the PGN of all decisive results in 25 moves or less. The Major first followed by the Open.

As I can't be bothered to edit it into a list, here's the PGN of all decisive results in 25 moves or less. The Major first followed by the Open.
Thanks! I see that several people both won and lost in double-quick time (in terms of number of moves). It looks like there were 31 miniatures in total from I don't know how many games. Some of them were probably mismatches in terms of playing strength. Makes me wonder whether miniatures are more common at lower levels of chess than among GMs, which is what I think you'd expect (though it is always nice to see a GM get walloped in less than 20 moves - 25 moves is not so bad).

nice to see two of my wins in the list above. i'd have to agree that lack of theory makes people make mistakes earlier on so you're likely to get more miniatures in the major.
