Dominguez switches from Cuba to USA

Post by Christopher Kreuzer » Thu Dec 20, 2018 12:58 pm

Cuban Grandmaster Leinier Dominguez now plays for the US

Looking at the transfers for this year:

https://ratings.fide.com/fedchange.phtml?year=2018

The notification for Dominguez's transfer went in on 17 September and took effect from 18 December.
The cost was 3500 Euros (compare with the 5000 Euros in April for Shirov switching from Latvia to Spain).

Wonder why the fee is less here than the usual 5000 Euros for a GM switch? The switches by GMs Robert Fontaine from Monaco to Switzerland and Dariusz Swiercz from Poland to USA were also the reduced 3500 Euros. Oh, it is the residency level (see here). Reduced if you have been resident in the new federation for more than 13 months.

Looking at the transfers involving ENG this year (may still be more before end of year):

Laurence Ball switched from RSA to ENG.
Thomas Day switched from ENG to GEO.
Borna Derakhshani switched from FID to ENG (previously Iran).
Orla Dorman switched from ENG to IRL.
Rufus Jones switched from ENG to ESP.
Joy Ching Li switched from ENG to HKG.
Chun Rong Lu switched from CHN to ENG.
Conor Murphy switched from ENG to IRL.
Katarzyna Toma switched from POL to ENG.
Daniil Kashanin switched from RUS to IRL.
Grzegorz Toczek switched from POL to WLS.

There were seven cases of transfers with 5000 Euros as a fee (all grandmasters): Boris Chatalbashev (BUL-FID-DEN), Jose Gonzalez Garcia (MEX-ESP), Alejandro Hoffman (ARG-URU), Bojan Kurajica (BIH-CRO), Alexei Shirov (LAT-ESP), Nenad Sulava (CRO-MNC), Bilel Bellahcene (FRA-ALG).

MNC is Monaco. Bellahcene is a young GM, only 20 or so.

No transfer fee listed for Ivan Cheparinov (BUL-FID-GEO).

I had forgotten the eye-watering compensation fees. 50,000 Euros if the GM is rated 2700 or above. I wonder if the Cuban federation waived that requirement for Dominguez or not? I guess that may not be a matter of public record for all transfers.

I think there was a special arrangement for BUL players during the period when the old Federation was suspended and the replacement one had yet to gain formal approval.

Katarzyna Toma might prove to be a useful addition to the England's Women's squad with a current rating of 2173.

She's actually a WGM, but lost a load of rating points recently in a couple of tournaments in India.
