That would be good, although presumably we haven't budgeted for this, although the International Director will no doubt get sponsorship for it

Why bother, when it is so much easier simply to increase membership fees?

Which is strange, as they are down as 3rd reserve, suggesting more than 2 teams have turned down the chance to play

I see it clashes with the St Louis Spring chess classic (Le Quang Liem, Ivanchuk) and the Prague Chess Festival (Navara, Duda, Harikrishna, Shankland, Wojtaszek) and Vietnam's HDBank Open (Wang Hao) according to 2700 chess

Poland has rejected the invitation due to its short notice. They pointed out that this tournament used to be played in June not March and that Polish top players had already accepted invitations to other events in March.

How did Sweden qualify? (or perhaps more realistically, did they qualify?)

The 4 listed reserves on the FIDE site are Vietnam, Armenia, France & Ukraine who finished in positions 7-10 at the Olympiad; presumably, they all said no

Sweden were 11th, and thus next in line

See http://chess-results.com/tnr420428.aspx?lan=1&art=2 and http://chess-results.com/tnr420408.aspx?lan=1&art=2 for the draws and pairings.

England start against hosts Kazakhstan and then play Azerbaijan, USA and Russia in successive rounds.

The time difference is six hours, so play is at 0900 UK time each day from Tuesday 5th March (Rest Day on Sunday 10th March; last round on Thursday 14th March at 0600).

Way to go, but hopefully heading for 2.5-1.5 against Kazakhstan, with Howell a knight for two pawns up and the others level.

Spoke too soon. The other three boards have all deteriorated, with Adams in a worse ending and McShane in zeitnot.
