Artemiev's opening occurred in Hebden v Rogers 1998, with the same course - a seemingly small edge from White that Black cannot (ever) seem to neutralise (meaning, perhaps, that it is not really just a small edge in the first place).
The Artemiev game had started 1. d4 d5 2. c4 c5 3. e3 which seem appropriate given that he was playing Axel Smith.

Ooh. McShane's game might be getting interesting again, in a good way!
It's going to have to be pretty interesting to make up for David and Mickey.

We should stop talking about round 9, this round isn't over yet.
chessbomb's Stockfish is enthusiastic about Liren Ding's position against Adams. Has it spotted the wrong colour rook pawn ending though? "All" Adams has to do to draw is exchange rooks, keep his King within range of a8 and contrive to play Nxg pawn.

I was trying not to think about that game. 52.Ra2 looks like a bluff, hoping Ding won't take on f6. Bluff failed. No draw now.

Jonathan, Artimiev drew in round 6. Did you mean Artimiev's round 7 win against Izoria?

Howell needs to turn round [+57.00] if he's to square the match. Probably won't, given he's playing on the increment

He didn't. England's loss confirmed (3-1). In the USA-India match, Swiercz is playing on the increment and trying to win the match for USA (he should, but the clock is a worry). Egypt about to win against the host nation (Kazakhstan).

Swiercz will have to mate with knight and bishop on the increment. Are the computer evaluations misleading here?

Adhiban looks like saving his ending in which case England may only get bronze if they can beat Sweden. (Malcolm Pein watching anxiously.)
But the good news is that India would have to beat Russia which seems unlikely.
Well done to Egypt for winning a match.

Russia have won gold with a round to spare, so will be interesting to see how they approach the match with India

England need to beat Sweden for a guaranteed bronze, and silver if India don't beat Russia

If India draw with Russia, then China would need to win 4-0 to catch them on both match points and board points

So, when did the top board of the England Open team last lose more than three games in a tournament? (I don't know the answer. I think Miles lost three in Buenos Aires in 1978.)

We should leave the post-mortems over the individual performances until after the event has finished, and get behind the team to go out and get the win that they need in the final round.

If you're not comfortable with discussing the players' present or historical performances mid-event, can I recommend you never get more closely involved with other sports

Tony Miles lost four at Lucerne 1982, three of which came in the last three rounds.
