A bomb scare has cancelled round one :(
I float like a pawn island and sting like an ignored knight

What do you think they will do here.

Give everyone an unrated ½ pt. bye or play round one on a rest day. (is there a precedent?)

There isn't a rest day so that won't work. Eight rounds is no good for norms. Two rounds in one day, early start and late finish?

Hi Nick,

Sorry, just assumed there be a rest day, it is the norm these days.

Chessbase are saying rounds 1 & 2 will be played tomorrow.

Round 1 had already started before being abandoned.

I cannot immediately think of any precedents. Would they repeat the same pairings? They could after all reverse the colours.

Rest days in Swiss tournaments are now very unusual. Even the British Championships has abolished them.

I'm assuming that under the pairing rules, you'd have to have the same pairings; if you keep the colours the same, then the issue is that the games were already some moves in; changing colours might be the best option

Looks like the same pairings and the same colours too; Wei Yi has drawn on board 1

Mamedov switched lines from the French Advance to the Tarrasch - I wasn't paying enough attention to see what other opening changes were made elsewhere. I wonder if anybody will keep the aborted games for posterity. I hope nobody wasted a decent novelty, or a new line.

"I had played a nice novelty in the Volga Gambit which is now worthless", joked Gluhovsky
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

It's a shame they have used this as an excuse to downgrade the time control for all rounds.

Sasikiran, well known here from visits to England, leads after the Saturday crack of dawn round with 4/4. Nothing exceptional about that, except that he is a full point clear of the chasing pack in a field of 160! The 3/4 peloton includes Wei Yi, Fedoseev and Dubov who are seeds 1, 2 and 4. In round 5 this evening Sasikiran plays the ninth seed Anton Korobov.
Later: Sasikiran won again to move to 5/5.

He's since drawn and lost, so the event is wide open now

Sasikiran draws his final round game fairly quickly to finish on 6.5

He's been overtaken by Martirosyan (who is a new name to me) and Kulaots also gets to 7/9

Kulaots wins on tiebreak
