European Individual Championship

Post by Roger de Coverly » Mon Mar 18, 2019 9:14 am

This starts today in Skopje, Macedonia

http://chess-results.com/tnr404992.aspx?lan=1

Top seeds are Artemiev ,Tomashevsky and Dubov.

ENG and SCO representation is just James Jackson of Banbury and Alan Tate of Scotland.

Presumably as usual it's a qualifier for the World Cup and thus the World Championship.

Luke & Gawain qualified from last year, so consistent with their appearance for Guildford at the most recent 4NCL weekend.

James Jackson's 1st round opponent, Zdenko Kozul, won the event back in 2006.

They drew a remarkable game which is well worth a look.

Artemiev now in the sole lead.

So far, he is the player of 2019 by a mile - winner at Gibraltar, linchpin to Russia's success at world chs and now sole leader with one round to go; albeit by half a point, that he will next play Black and hie tiebreaks perhaps cannot be relied on.

Winning both this and Gibraltar would be sensational, has anyone won two swisses of such strength in the same year before?

No doubt Leonard has already looked at his age, and his recent rise and can tell us what he holds in store. I'd be curious to hear his view. (Well, it's probably in the Guardian tomorrow).

Does he win the thing if he holds on against Rodshtein?
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Grandelius (who has also had a very impressive result) is the only one to have reached 8.5/11. He will be joined by either Rodshtein or Artemiev, so surely someone can calculate those two tie-breaks?

We have loads of chess officials and rating experts on this website. As a chess journalist with an urgent deadline to meet and no information available, I would really appreciate it if just one of them would spare a few minutes NOW to provide a definite answer.

As a favour to you, I have endeavoured to do the calculation. I agree with Justin that Artemiev will win on tiebreak.

However, I accept no responsibility if I am wrong. It is very close.

Thanks, David. They have also interviewed him on the live stream as the winner so I guess that's sufficient.

Correct me if I am wrong, but:
- There is a 24-way tie for 12th-35th place.
- The top 23 qualify for the World Cup.

I am sure I could read the regulations, but ... is this done on tie-break, or are there playoffs? 24 players playing off for 12 places works remarkably well...
