I do wonder if there is potentially an element of the positive effects of Carlsen’s new “aggressive” black repertoire (and World Champ prep) wearing off. The other players are catching up and setting him problems (which is always inevitable in “sharper” openings) and he’s started to jump about and vary from his first choice options (eg. game against Caruana).

Sinquefield Cup may be interesting in this regard.
