Looking at McShane - Yuffa, I wonder how many theoretical variations see Black knights developed directly to e7 and d7. The Hippo, presumably, and there's a line against the Reti/KIA which I seem to recall being recommended in the recent Chess Stars book, but is there much more significant than that?

Nepo held with White by Predke.
And struggling with Black today, after 17 moves

Both Brits in the playoffs, then. Still almost impossible to call Gawain's match. One assumes that Luke is favourite against almost anyone in this tie break formula but I for one really don't know anything about his opponent; does anyone? (DON'T JUST LOOK UP CAREER STATS!! WE HAVE BEEN HERE BEFORE!) Whoever he is, he certainly has confidence, to judge from some way back that he could get away with ...Rxe2 and ...Rxb2 today

We Yi seems to be winning with Black against Antón, who won with Black yesterday

I believe that it was long thought to be drawn, until 5 man endings were solved by computer in the mid 1980s.

Lagarde never reached a position which was winning in less than the remainder of the 50 moves, but he got closer than Yuffa did.
Still on the subject of BB v N wasn't there a game - perhaps from a British Championship in the late 80s or maybe '90 or '91 - in which Julian Hodgson held the draw v James Howell?

1990. They also played in 1991 but that was part of Hodgson's 5/5 start which led to his first title.

That wasn't BBvN though. I do see a Hodgson-King BBvN where Danny defended successfully.

For the historic record: the defensive technique (N v BB) used most clearly in the Arkell-Lagarde game was all known and published at least as far back as the 1960s. The key endgame bible then was Cheron's work. You place N on a fianchetto square, say g7; then if your K can safely reach f7/g6, the win is extremely difficult. The defence can get turfed out but then K+N should rush to set up the same position in another corner. Before the tablebases, this endgame was thought by the Cheron bible to be a stone-cold draw.

I saved N v BB against Miroslav Filip (twice a world championship Candidate) at the Siegen Olympiad 1970 (10-20 or so years before the surprise tablebase analysis). The game was adjourned, Scotland had Cheron with us and I was prepared to play exactly as Keith did. The Czechs told us that poor Filip spent hours in overnight analysis but couldn't work it out, though he believed it had been shown to be a theoretical draw … critically he didn't get hold of Cheron!

On resumption, he apparently recalled the 'drawing' method, which I immediately set up in one corner, and offered an immediate draw as it was clear that I knew what I was doing. He didn't even bother chasing me at least to a second corner.

The Czechs all had a team laugh about all this. Even today this endgame is still a tough one for both sides … over the board 'only', of course!

I stand corrected, having now downloaded it from Britbase. As does chessbase, which gave the game drawn after move 14 rather than 142

Both English players fighting to save rook endings a pawn down: Gawain at least (after 58 moves) looks to be failing in that endeavour.

yes, I think Luke's is tenable, and Gawain at least has White in the return
