But it is surprising that Dubov, who judging by the clock times evidently won the preparation battle, didn't find 12 b4 which is quite a human move.

Is the engine they using at chess24 just terrible? It seems less reliable than it used to be.

I think that you now have to subscribe as a Premium Member in order to get a decent engine.

Given that it can be difficult to avoid seeing the wretched thing, I am happy that it's useless.

Nepo held with White by Predke. I was intrigued on looking up the latter to see he was from Dimitrovgrad - how many Russian cities named after Communist leaders in the Soviet period have retained those names in the modern era? (Tolyatti is another one, I note.)

Mmm, as it acquired that name almost immediately on its acquisition by the USSR it's not really what I'm thinking of.

He was supposed to be Black, by my reading of the regulations.
It's a really difficult regulation to explain clearly. I tried drafting an equivalent for the LCC Super Blitz a few years ago, and I confused myself when writing it. So I gave up in the end, and just said we'd do a coin toss before every match. It wasn't any less fair, but it was much easier to explain! No real need to prepare quite so intensively though, so it isn't really viable for the World Cup where you want to know colours in advance.
