Love the edit :)
Last kick of the game, first moment I wished I'd gone instead of watching on TV
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

On a related note, did Gawain's opponent just accept a draw offer that he really didn't ought to have done?
Probably not, if I am reading the clock times correctly and remembering that he is human!

But did he have serious losing chances. with four moves ( three, really ) to make to the time control? Anyway he's a youngster, supposed to be at a stage where he is learning, not grabbing half points wherever he can.

A Sutovsky post on FB serves as a nice summary for Round 4: "Magnus was not on the verge of losing. He was lost. Deadly and hopelessly. But no, there was a glimmer of a hope - white could win in so many different ways, that Kovalev must have felt himself as a kid in toys-r-us. A choice was so wide. And he still had time to enjoy his position and kept choosing between a variety of winning moves. Once Yusupov taught us, the young students of Polugaevsky chess school: when you are clearly winning - pick one move, focus on it and calculate till the end. Do not compare. But to Magnus' luck, Kovalev did not attend that lesson... Carlsen escapes, though he is yet to find his play. Meanwhile Caruana, Wang Hao and Mcshane share the lead with 3.5/4."

I was surprised to find that Cheparinov and Vitiugov are still playing and a decisive result would let one of them catch the leaders but it looks drawn.

Luke's got White again, hopefully that'll help. Rest ofRound 5 pairings.

The chessgames site comes up with 5 previous encounters, but none since 2015

Two wins for Caruana, one for Luke, two draws.

Good luck Luke

Pete Doggers round 3 report has analysis of Luke's win, and his round 4 report also features a Luke win
Caruana said: "Playing Luke is always fun. I’ve played him very rarely, but on the few occasions that we have played, they have been fun games."

I don't think Luke will have much problem finding something to write about for his new column...

Luke has a shot at England #1 on live ratings today, for the first time if I recall correctly. Admittedly beating Fabi not entirely straightforward, but may stay relevant regardless of todays game if continues to have a good tournament.

Luke has a good position at move 25. Caruana's 21st move was not the best.

Looks decent at move 34 now, but Luke is short of time

Think Luke's got it now (after 52.Qg5!) - which would make him outright leader! (Edit: Though not quite as over as it would've been after 53.Nc1, fingers crossed)

Hope so

Wang Hao and Maghsoodloo drew, so they are joined on 4 by Grischuk, Shirov & Fedoseev

It's now a draw by the looks of things, but probably not an easy draw...
