45th Guernsey International Chess Festival
Not as strong as the Isle of Man...

Live games should appear at http://www.guernseychessclub.org.gg/fes ... stival.htm
But sometimes the first round transmission doesn't work as well as hoped.

Is there a reason why the pairings do not look quite normal?

Agreed; the colours for the higher rated player seem wrong on boards 15 and 18: David Sedgwick one of the beneficiaries!NickFaulks wrote: ↑Sun Oct 20, 2019 2:00 pmIs there a reason why the pairings do not look quite normal?

I think those two pairings are correct, just not being played on the boards you'd expect.Tim Harding wrote: ↑Sun Oct 20, 2019 3:49 pmAgreed; the colours for the higher rated player seem wrong on boards 15 and 18: David Sedgwick one of the beneficiaries!NickFaulks wrote: ↑Sun Oct 20, 2019 2:00 pmIs there a reason why the pairings do not look quite normal?
The anomalous pairings are on boards 1 and 21. Kraft should be playing Hebden on board 1 and Kirby playing Canonne on board 15.

There were some adjustments owing to one or two players arriving late.Tim Harding wrote: ↑Sun Oct 20, 2019 3:49 pmAgreed; the colours for the higher rated player seem wrong on boards 15 and 18: David Sedgwick one of the beneficiaries!
There is no prohibition on that. It is not a title tournament.
For the record, I had no involvement in the specifics. Also, I do not believe for one moment that favouring me was a consideration.
In any case, the pairing didn't do me much good. I had a short draw against a lower rated player.

Things seem to be okay this year. (The Hebden games is a late start.)Kevin Thurlow wrote: ↑Sun Oct 20, 2019 1:36 pmLive games should appear at http://www.guernseychessclub.org.gg/fes ... stival.htm

One game was moved to allow a player to use a specific board. Mark Hebden arrived late (by arrangement) and the organizers usually find a volunteer from Guernsey to have the late start, rather than potentially annoy a visitor!
I had a longer draw than David. We are the right colours to meet in round 2 as well... So we need a few more draws this round.

It looks as if they dealt with Mark's late arrival by just switching a couple of pairings. If you combine that with a pair of players being moved to a fixed board, it all makes sense as a normal top half v second half pairing.Kevin Thurlow wrote: ↑Sun Oct 20, 2019 6:24 pmMark Hebden arrived late (by arrangement) and the organizers usually find a volunteer from Guernsey to have the late start, rather than potentially annoy a visitor!

Re: 45th Guernsey International Chess Festival
Does anyone know the reason for Black winning in Kirby - Hebden in round two ?

The Curse of Sedgwick has just struck, for the first time in quite a while.
As is customary with the Curse, it was a false alarm.

It hasn't always been customary: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-b ... e-34794497David Sedgwick wrote: ↑Tue Oct 22, 2019 6:35 pmThe Curse of Sedgwick has just struck, for the first time in quite a while.

It was always a bit of a stretch to describe that incident as an example of the Curse.Alex Holowczak wrote: ↑Tue Oct 22, 2019 6:41 pmIt hasn't always been customary: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-b ... e-34794497

I had forgotten, but on looking backing back at the thread on last year's event, I found the following:
The Curse never did strike last year, but ...David Sedgwick wrote: ↑Mon Oct 22, 2018 9:08 am
To the best of my recollection, The Curse of Sedgwick has never yet struck at Guernsey.
Today might be the time, of course.

I don't know the cause of the alarm - I suspect the kitchen burnt something (I have ruled out David holding a cigarette lighter to a smoke detector!).
Meanwhile, despite the interruption, Mark Hebden and Nigel Povah are on 3/3, a full point ahead of the chasing pack. Well, I say "chasing pack", but with the exception of Reijneveld - Morcom, most of the top board games were fairly uneventful draws. Admittedly, the event has its usual big middle of similarly rated players, so perhaps you do not expect a horde of decisive games.

Re: 45th Guernsey International Chess Festival
Any bets on how many more moves Van den Boogaart - Rosen will last ?
White just played 15.Rd1 when 15. Qc3 was huge.
Edit: Black made it to move 21.
