"The most tragic father/son occurrence was in Tromso 2014. Peter Meier was on board 1 for Seychelles, and his father Kurt was on board 2. It was Kurt who died with a heart attack during the final round."

Thanks Alex - How could I forget that...

Ukraine and Russia now lead, the latter through a win by Dubov as Black in the Leningrad Dutch, no less.

A pity about England today. I am not so sure where David went wrong. But anyway, still much to play for. (Was much of Gawain's game in theory? Somehow it seemed largely familiar).

It may well have been familiar to Gawain, as he was nearly an hour ahead on the clock at one stage. The stockfish engine at chessbomb seemed confident that despite sacrificing two pawns, Gawain was always at least equal.

One of the computer lines seemed to suggest that David's big chance to draw was after 33.Rff7, when it might seem obvious that playing 33...Rb1+ and 34...d4+ would gain a tempo in these critical lines and White is forced to take the perpetual on the seventh rank, but David played an immediate 33...d4. If David had more time for these moves, he might have seen that. I would say he should have seen that, even in time trouble. Let's hope that this is a blip and England get back into contention in this tournament in the later rounds.

Not quite the same thing but Milan Vidmar Senior and Junior played in at least two tournaments together. There will no doubt be hundreds of such examples but the Vidmars did both play in the 1947 Jugoslav championships (Senior won in 33 moves). Not exactly the Little Wibbling Village Tournament!

My database says it followed McShane-Dominguez Perez, Netanya 2019 until Black varied at move 24.

It is a day few of us in Tromso will forget, especially with a second player dying that evening :(

Poland v Spain on table 9 is a harsh pairing.

Interesting twists at the end of Luke and Gawain's wins (in Luke's game, the win could have slipped away). The two knights beating the two bishops in Gawain's game is a nice one.

Luke's opponent defended the final phase of the RvB endgame well until the blunder 107 f6?? when 107 Bd6 or Bb8 could still hold according to the tablebase. Presumably White was very short of time; nobody would like to have to defend that one.

The turnaround in Gawain's game was impressive because he was probably losing around moves 20-26. Knightmares for White in the final phase indeed.

Rd 7 tomorrow: Germany (10 MP) v Russia (11); Armenia (9) v England (9); Czech Republic (8) v Ukraine (9)

The women beat Sweden and play the Dutch tomorrow. (Jovanka lost to Pia Cramling; Pia's daughter drew with Sarah Longson, but England won the White games on boards 2 and 4. Ingrid rested.)

Armenia next and with three rounds to go, some sort of positive result (win or draw) tomorrow seems necessary to stay in the hunt for a medal. Win or draw would, I assume, get us Russia in Round 8 but we will see.

Fingers crossed for the team. Probably minimum of two wins and a draw needed. Final round is the same day as the Rugby World Cup final and starts four hours earlier, so I think there is a clash there for those watching both?
