Stinging Lichess editorial
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Games kick off at 11am UK time today (I saw someone asking earlier). Last round (if we get that far) is an hour earlier

Intriguingly, after Giri's 13th he is half an hour up on Nepo (which is a very hard thing to achieve) but minus one on Chessbomb's computer [EDIT: and minus 1.45 on Chess24 after Nepo's reply]. Presumably some very cunning preparation.

My understanding ( based on what was said at the PB meeting ) is that the problems arose not because the Russians wouldn't let them in, but because the Chinese wouldn't let them out.

When is it going to be understood that the Chessbomb Stockfish is, if I may be forgiven for using language which I generally avoid here, a steaming pile of pigshit?

Grischuk and Alekseenko have taken three hours to play fourteen moves of not the most complex or double-edged opening I've ever seen.

Ah yes, the official start of the Candidates - Grischuk in time trouble

Any surprises in any of the 4 opening choices?

surprises? depends on correct assessment of Ding's game but surely Wang is completely fine at least. Nepo likely to win now as Black against Giri, so possibly an early bid there for chief contender to Caruana, who is making a comfortable black draw with MVL. Grischuk much better in all Russsian battle.

Now I see that an error from Grischuk has led to what seems an inevitable draw by repetition

hard to give Ding the benefit of the doubt, he must be losing. Has quite overplayed his position.

So much for my wondering whether Wang would win a game! I'll refrain from suggesting that he might not win a second ....

MVL - Caruana drawn, as is Grischuk - Alekseenko

Svidler says he is one of Alekseenko's seconds; have we had official confirmation of any other seconds?

A strange game. White seemed to have a comfortable and pleasant edge, let it slip and then played f4 when it looked completely the wrong time to do so.
