Bit surprising they followed suit, albeit Nepo is in the lead of the tournament

And great drama as Caruana beats MVL in what looked like an unwinnable Rook and g-pawn v knight and f-pawn ending.

Well that was tense - I had £40 on Caruana beating MVL at 10/3

Re: Candidates Tournament 2020
And Grischuk's provocation strategy pays off, albeit not for him but for Alekseenko.
Giri is the only one of the top five to have White tomorrow: if he's going to make a move this would seem to be the time for it.

According to Lomonosov tables, a decisive mistake was Nh6 in this position at move 55 rather than Ne7JustinHorton wrote: ↑Mon Apr 19, 2021 6:27 pmAnd great drama as Caruana beats MVL in what looked like an unwinnable Rook and g-pawn v knight and f-pawn ending.

Re: Candidates Tournament 2020
I was trying to use Nalimov but (not for the first time recently) the board on their site refused to materialise

I had the same problem. I think that modern browsers reject the Nalimov board as unsafe.JustinHorton wrote: ↑Mon Apr 19, 2021 7:08 pmI was trying to use Nalimov but (not for the first time recently) the board on their site refused to materialise

Re: Candidates Tournament 2020
Oh that's interesting. There's a version of it on a creaky Shredder site that worked for a bit (and then didn't) but is there a reliable version anywhere?

Also, do we know how Grischuk broke his hand?

Or Wang Hao, if Giri over presses?JustinHorton wrote: ↑Mon Apr 19, 2021 6:47 pmAnd Grischuk's provocation strategy pays off, albeit not for him but for Alekseenko.

Svidler's comment about Alekseenko was
I think Svidler is Alekseenko's second tooHe could end up in a decisive role, not in the sense that he’s going to win the tournament, but quite often you see these events being decided by everybody will try hard to beat him, and at some point he might win a game against someone who’s gambling, and that guy will be out of the picture, so these underdogs have an important role in the tournament, in the sense that it’s a potential full point and someone is going to fail and it’s going to hurt him.
Tomorrow we have:
Alekseenko (3.5) v Caruana (4.5)
Grischuk (3.5) v Nepo (5)
Giri (4) v Wang Hao (4)
Ding (3) v MVL (4.5)
Caruana now has a better tiebreak than MVL

Grischuk the only one still without a win after today.

Re: Candidates Tournament 2020
It should have been but then Caruana went wrong. 59 Ke4 was the tablebase's recommendation though Fabi's 59 Kf4 was still OK.Roger de Coverly wrote: ↑Mon Apr 19, 2021 7:01 pmAccording to Lomonosov tables, a decisive mistake was Nh6 in this position at move 55 rather than Ne7JustinHorton wrote: ↑Mon Apr 19, 2021 6:27 pmAnd great drama as Caruana beats MVL in what looked like an unwinnable Rook and g-pawn v knight and f-pawn ending.
Next move 60 Kf5 was necessary to preserve the win, but he continued to set problems and MVL made a fatal error later.
He would still have been in a tablebase draw position with the far from obvious 64...Nc7.
