Maybe monetary compensation is the best that can be done.
Yeah, he really needs that!

Yes, I sometimes wonder if the name of an opening matters.

'Adams essayed an English, perhaps making a national point' is the kind of thing we sometimes read.

I tend to think that the name of an opening is of no relevance whatever.

We certainly don't see Adams playing 1. c4 often!

Was 1. e4 d5 already known as the Scandinavian - or just the Centre Counter - when Larsen beat Karpov with it in 1979?

Did it not depend on the language? Centre/er Counter being the norm in material written for native English speakers, but Scandinavian elsewhere? Later in the 1980s, the "Icelandic Gambit" offshoot became popular. ( 1. e4 d5 2. exd5 Nf6 3. c4 e6 )

I was genuinely pleased to buy a book called Winning With The Catalan and find it was shortened on the receipt to Winning With The Cat.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

I am reminded of an annotation by John Saunders of one of my best wins, which started 1.c4. From memory it said, "The English Opening. I am a patriotic man, but this smacks of low-class nationalism of the worst kind."

I assumed he was joking.

I played a Dutch woman at Guernsey who went 1.c4, so my obvious reply was 1....f5. She didn't smile, but continued to smoke her cigar.

Radjabov reacts to the postponement. He has plenty to say and he wants back in.

I was hoping to see some chess after a long day working from home.

So closing ceremony, ' is the Fat Lady singing'? ……... 'half way there..oh..oh living on a prayer'.

Graham Ruy Lopez start getting referred to as 'Spanish' 1970s … Monty Python..the Spanish Inquisition ?

So are they all going to be able to get home, will their countries allow them back in?
Sutovsky "Nearly all the players and officials left Yekaterinburg. Most of them flew to Moscow early afternoon and already continued from there on. We also secured a direct charter flight to Rotterdam leaving in a couple of hours. FIDE and local organizers cared for all related costs, including VIP lounges for everyone. We also accompanied every player, journalist, commentator, arbiter or appeals member - to make sure they are safe. We will keep doing our utmost in these difficult times and try to deliver for the sake of entire chess community. Thank you for your support."

Later....

Caruana "Charter flight delayed till 4.50am. Not entirely sure we'll be let out of the country. Complete farce"

Dvorkovic defends FIDE's position against some pretty blunt questioning from Danny Rensch.

Sutovsky also defends FIDE's position starting with an explanation of what happened 20 days ago with Radjabov. Sutovsky was not happy that Radjabov made his objections initially via social media.
