Yes, Kovalev - van Foreest was interesting, bit surprised Kovalev managed to hold it; he gets black against Carlsen tomorrow
Caruana - Firouzja tomorrow
So - Carlsen in the last round on Sunday

It might be worth pointing out that in this tournament Caruana is potentially benefitting from the “Linares ‘93” effect - ie. meeting all but one of his opponents directly after they have faced the World Champion.

A very likely Caruana win, then. It will be a brave man to bet on some one other than Ding or Caruana for the candidates, though I remember Danny suggested Ian Nepo, and he might indeed be the most mercurial/dangerous unknown among the others.
(Which is not saying much. To call it a somewhat disappointing-looking candidates' field should not be too controversial).

Apart from MVL, its hard to see anybody who should obviously be in it but isn't.

Well Danny's already given Firouzja the kiss of death on this thread so Nepo may be doomed as well

2016 Candidates won by Karjakin, who scored 6/13 at Wijk in 2016
2018 Candidates won by Caruana, who scored 5/13 at Wijk in 2018
2020 should be Giri?

Mamed and Karjakin, arguably Aronian too, would surely interest us far more than Grischuk (no offence, but how many times?) and the until recently retired amateurs Radjabov, Wang Hao. I give the benefit of the doubt to 22 year old Alekseenko (I don't think it is outrageous that he got the wildcard instead of MVL).Matt Mackenzie wrote: ↑Fri Jan 24, 2020 7:12 pmApart from MVL, its hard to see anybody who should obviously be in it but isn't.

The same Aronian who has repeatedly flopped at Candidate level, and Karjakin whose style is hardly thrills and spills?

Mamedyarov, perhaps......

David Antón, meanwhile, is a point clear in the Challengers

He has white today against Warmerdam, who is in last, so may seal a place in the A group for next year; it would be good to see him at that level, having finished 5th on tiebreak at the Grand Swiss at the IoM last year, just ahead of CarlsenJustinHorton wrote: ↑Sat Jan 25, 2020 8:49 amDavid Antón, meanwhile, is a point clear in the Challengers

There's an Evans Gambit like idea in that sequence.
1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Nd4 4. Nxd4 exd4 5. 0-0 Bc5 6. b4
On 6. .. Bxb4, engines reckon 7. Bb2 is best but 7. c3 can also be played.
