Still no Black wins - Giri also set to win with White in the last unfinished game - or, of course, Carlsen wins.
(still, he's now at 111 even with the two "local" games taken out)

However it seems like a Black win is imininent as Van Foreest is trouncing Vitiugov. I've not been following but White seems to have simply overlooked a sinple pawn loss at move ten.

....though Van Foreest, in no sort of time trouble, has just given Vitiugov a piece back....

...and so Black is now playing with bishop and six pawns against bishop and a pawn.

Carlsen's unbeaten streak is in danger against Vishy...
Or not any more. Engine wanted to play it differently.

Looking like the pawns will prevail

Maybe I've overreacting, but Fiouzja already looks a top five in the world player. maybe top three on current form. (top one?!) Maybe history will show us that Carlsen was just the first in the line of these super kids, who take chess to another level because of engines. And in fact Carlsen wasn't that special after all, just the first of his kind.

That does seem maybe a *slight* overreaction, yeahDaniel Gormally wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2020 6:26 pmAnd in fact Carlsen wasn't that special after all, just the first of his kind.

And Caruana wins. I thought he should have played 79 Rxc2+, he'd still be winning.

van Foreest - Firouzja
Ludicrous, simply ludicrous! 100 years of carefully honed Najdorf theory, ignored. 500 years of basic chess principles, ignored. 6. Bd2 the other day was bad enough. But 6 Rg1 is an outrage. As for 11 Kd1, words fail me. What are we Naj players to do now?

The TN, though not specially impressive, is actually 12...Be6 rather than 12... Bg4+ which shows two draws and a black win. After 23 moves White has a small edge but a draw is likely.David Robertson wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2020 2:23 pmvan Foreest - Firouzja

Vitiugov is mishandling his clock so I reckon Magnus will win that, setting up Firouzja v Carlsen in round 9 nicely for Tuesday (free day tomorrow) with the world champion a point behind the young pretender.

Someone, possibly Fischer, wrote that 5. .. a6 was a high class waiting move. Recent years have shown that it's so much of a waiting move that White can indulge in almost any flight of fantasy in reply.David Robertson wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2020 2:23 pmBut 6 Rg1 is an outrage. 6 Rg1 like some lines of 6 h3 is an attempt to throw the g pawn forwards and perhaps dislodge the f6 Knight. There are numerous lines in the Sicilian, the Keres Attack being but one example, featuring the charge of the g pawn. As to Kd1 it avoids losing the Queen to Nf3 check and keeps the Queen on d4 where it pins the Knight on e5 to the Rook on h8. It's probably an engine suggestion because in general a human player may not want to lose castling rights.

Agreed. 11 Ke2 was far more naturalDavid Robertson wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2020 2:23 pmvan Foreest - Firouzja
