I vaguely recall a report that Maia had a "lucky doll" that she took to the board back then.

The only serious mathematical study of the dominance of men in chess that I'm aware of is the Bilalic et al one, and I think their conclusion was that participation rates accounted for something like 96% of the effect in question.
