Gibraltar 2020
Gibraltar starts on Tuesday: maybe the last before Brexit causes complications at the border with Spain?
I'm surprised to see Nakamura is not listed among the competitors; anyone know why?

Mamedyarov is top seed and then MVL.
There's some potential for Iran v Israel pairings to rock the boat.

Have the metal detectors prevented David from taking in his favourite liquid refreshment? (It's non-alcoholic by the way.)

And it was going so well. Hard luck, David, well played with one obvious caveat.

Impressive swindling technique to even get to that point, mind. David was losing until his opponent allowed the mass build-up on h2.

True, but having observed a huge number of David's games over the years I never felt that part was in doubt.IM Jack Rudd wrote: ↑Mon Jan 20, 2020 12:02 pmImpressive swindling technique to even get to that point, mind.

Oh for goodness sake! Not paying attention, I thought for ages that this part of the thread was about a near-swindle perpetuated by David Howell. It was only on seeing that the Masters section does not start until tomorrow (and clicking through to the photo) that I realised it was a different David...!
[EDIT: Double fail, as I see David Howell isn't even playing in Gibraltar. ]

And so it came to pass. Hubris before nemesis, perhaps.
It is, sadly.
That makes two of us.
Thank you to those whom made supportive comments. Tomorrow is another day.

Re: Gibraltar 2020
As David has said, I have a photo of him with aforementioned beverage, and also one of his opponent pointing gleefully to the a1 square on a demo board, but the forum has a restriction on the size/resolution of photos it is prepared to display. Which is perfectly reasonable as, otherwise, our beloved forum would be festooned with all manner of photographic nonsense. Heartfelt commiserations to David, though I'm pleased to report that his demeanour on hanging his queen was that of a true Kiplingesque gentleman who knows to treat triumph and disaster the same.

How big was the image as a matter of interest?John Saunders wrote: ↑Mon Jan 20, 2020 4:53 pmAs David has said, I have a photo of him with aforementioned beverage, and also one of his opponent pointing gleefully to the a1 square on a demo board, but the forum has a restriction on the size/resolution of photos it is prepared to display.
