Gawain's opponent may be taking the provocation in his game a bit far

Pragg better against Topalov, Cramling better against Ivanchuk....

Update: Pia drew, but Pragg is now clearly winning with Q for R+N and +4.51 on Stockfish

Can anyone explain why Stephen Gordon's opponent resigned today? Chessbomb (SF) gives Gordon [-0.35]. Has his human opponent seen beyond the 'horizon'?

I noticed that. At a glance I can believe that white thought black will take on g2 and then create a passed pawn with h4 and that will win a piece. The engines seem to think that isn't the end of the story though.

Surprising resignation, but I think black's winning. Chess24 seems to catch up if you play a few moves - … Bxg2...Be4... Bc2-b3-c4... White bishop seems to end up stuck on g2 and then trapped on h1 after black defends p with Kc6.

Maybe making a choice between self mate - a6, Ka8, a7 or black promoting a pawn after B takes g2 or was loss on time?
Maybe I'll be higher than 150 on the Jan 2020 list.

And I had not seen the analysis of Richard.

I'm not quite following the move order here, but for what it's worth, Stockfish on my phone is currently at 0:00 50-ply after this position (which is not of course forced, just a how-might-the-game-go)

My guess would be that White saw they were losing a piece to ...h4 and ...g3 and looked no further.

I would if I were sure what it was.

Yes, after 34-ply or so it comes round to your way of thinking. I am sceptical that White saw so far though.

OK, now we're making progress with one curiosity, let's try another. Why did MVL's opponent resign, with SF giving [0.00]?

I’ll nominate a combination of MVL carelessness and double chess blindness on that one (assuming all moves shown happened). Although Stockfish seems to give White a slight edge after a bit of thought. Rc7 is a blunder.
