GM Irina Krush won the 2020 U.S. Women's Championship on Sunday, her eighth title in total. This year the tournament was held online due to the pandemic.

Krush scored an undefeated 8.5/11 in a 12-player single round-robin, played online at a time control of 25 minutes plus a five-second increment. It was held on October 21-24 and had a prize fund of $100,000.

Chasing Krush until the very last moment was IM Carissa Yip, who took clear second place. The biggest surprise of the event was 12th-seed IM Dorsa Derakhshani, who scored 7.5/11 points en route to earning third place.

At a glance I would have thought that Zatonskih finishing last was a much bigger surprise :?

Hi Lawrence, that was Pete Doggers not me!

Yes, agree with that; I picked out the Derakhshani quote as of interest to English players

I wasn't blaming you for the quote :)

Yes, very much so. It looked like a couple of players had lower ratings than her but still a welcome result.

Back to the chess, 3 wins from So on day 1, starting with a 99 move defeat of Lenderman, who then drew in 144 with Naka, and 42 with Ramirez; long day

Wesley So seems to have the happy knack of inducing blunders from his opponents. He's going to be hard to stop now.

The Lenderman game was a stone cold draw until a few moves from the end and Liang threw away first a win and then a draw.

So won his first 5 before a draw with black v Dominguez; he's half a point clear of Xiong and Robson

Lenderman had a 119 move draw, followed by losses of 45 and 71 moves

As many commenters are saying, this has at best a shaky claim to be a *real* US Chess Championship.

("rapid" and/or "online", then fine)

Pete Doggers day 2 report
"To have two people chasing you with only half a point behind is very disappointing," said So after the sixth round had ended. The remark was tongue in cheek, but it is indeed remarkable that the American grandmaster, who only conceded one draw, isn't leading by at least a full point.

????

Wesley was a point ahead going into the last round. He and Hikaru blitzed out a 20+ move theoretical draw in nothing flat.
So no tie.

So 9/11.
Xiong 8.5
Robson 7.5,
Dominguez 6
Shankland & Liang 5.5
Nakamura & Sevian 5
Lenderman 4.5
Swiercz 3.5
Ramirez & Moradiabadi 3
