I suppose one thing to be said for online blitz is that you don't lose on time because the pieces get knocked over.

So what happened there then

Suggestion Giri lost on time
Van Foreest and Esipenko over 2700 on the live rating list, by the way

I haven't read the regulations but hope it was just a bit of fun to decide who got the monster trophy.

Re: Wijk aan Zee 2021
Having watched the coverage on chess24 I thought I'd try to find a video of the players to find out exactly what happened and the best I could find was this which doesn't really explain anything (although it appears more moves were played than appeared in the pgn):
https://twitter.com/chesscom/status/1355939043553456129
Is that really what the official live coverage was like? Why oh why do the broadcasters insist on switching to a view of the players during frantic time scrambles? It's something which has bugged me for ages but this was a really bad example. Just have a camera which has a clear view of the board and clock!
EDIT: Now it seems that more moves have been added and Giri didn't lose on time but actually lost on the board. The video above shows the black pawn on g2. Surely this proves my point about the awful coverage. The commentators had no idea what was happening because the digital board can't keep up.

Agreed. On the live programme I was watching they left the important Firouzja-Wojtaszek game to show this farce. I am sure it has been discussed many times before, but I don't see what a play off adds. At least they could play a 3+2 game, to reduce the chance of one player getting flagged. Otherwise, a great tournament.NickFaulks wrote: ↑Sun Jan 31, 2021 6:09 pmI haven't read the regulations but hope it was just a bit of fun to decide who got the monster trophy.

Re: Wijk aan Zee 2021
That Twitter clip from the commentary suggests Giri lost on time at move 58 but the moves as shown on chess24 go to move 61 when Giri (presumably down to almost no time) played 61 Rd8 allowing 61...g2 promoting next move, whereas 61 Bc5+ was still winning as the R can get across to g6 and stop the queening.
I agree that the camera in such situations should always show the board and preferably also the clock. Especially if the commentators are relying on it.
A really stupid way to end the tournament though I am happy for Jorden (who was my friendly first round opponent a few years ago in Reykjavik).

It would also be informative if somebody ( obviously not the players ) knew how close they were to move 60 and therefore 3 second increments.Tim Harding wrote: ↑Sun Jan 31, 2021 6:57 pmI agree that the camera in such situations should always show the board and preferably also the clock. More confusion, under the guise of less
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Do you think that the players should be told when 60 moves have been made?NickFaulks wrote: ↑Sun Jan 31, 2021 7:26 pmIt would also be informative if somebody ( obviously not the players ) knew how close they were to move 60 and therefore 3 second increments.

Re: Wijk aan Zee 2021
My point is that the commentators, and their audience, would like to know when for instance 58 moves have been made. I'm not sure why, as it appeared, they didn't.
What the players should know is a different question, as is how to handle pieces getting scattered on a DGT board.
In general, I think we have to accept that playing blitz without increment make chaos quite likely, and we must assume that is what organisers seek.

It's a great tournament, and especially in the current circumstances, really glad they played it
I don't like the playoff format, but they pay for it, so up to them

Jorden Van Foreest pulled off one of the great shocks in Tata Steel history in winning the 83rd event and becoming the first Dutch winner since Jan Timman in 1985. Van Foreest and Anish Giri drew all three of their tie-break games, the final one being an Armageddon tie-break where Van Foreest had draw odds. As 11th seed Van Foreest was on no-one's list of potential winners but he was well prepared and solid.
